Change Your Lifestyle
Nutrition and Exercise are vitally important lifestyle factors; however there are other factors that we so often forget about that impact significantly on body fat reduction, muscle building as well as physical and mental health.
Sleep and Stress are two of the 'Biggies' that can impact on our training and end results.
Getting to Bed on Time
It has been said that sleep is 200 times the best antioxidant for your body. During sleep we recover from the day and our cells rejuvenate from the day's physical and mental stressors including exercise. Ideal sleep is 7-9 hours per night, totally un-interrupted. That's right we shouldn't have to wake up to go the loo! Interrupting your sleep interferes with your sleep hormones and stress hormones which can contribute to body fat storage.
Don't over do it!
When we expose out bodies to too much stress, we can't adapt to exercise the way we should. Stress hormones such as Cortisol contribute to body fat storage particularly around the mid section. It is fact that a little stress is healthy as it keeps our bodies 'On the Ball'; but too much can be more dangerous than you are probably aware of.
Forms of stress:
- Work stress - deadlines, working long hours, shift work
- Financial stress - money worries, deadlines, credit cards
- Physical stress - illness, low immunity, too much exercise, not enough exercise, lack of sleep, interrupted sleep
- Environmental stress - negative people, negative environments, toxic/polluted environment
- Emotional Stress - anxiety, worry, grief , anger, grudges and guilt
- Chemical stress - Cosmetics, parabens, pesticides and herbicides, hormones and drugs fed to our meat sources
Conclusion
As you can see our bodies are exposed to stress everyday from all angles. It is important to be aware of these stresses and how they maybe impacting on your exercise adaptation and ultimately your life!
Applying relaxation techniques is a fantastic way to start the process of stress management. At Synergy we believe it is important to manage the stress first and then work on ways to eliminate negative stress as much as possible.
